SHENZHEN

Got a free day during a recent f&b portfolio assignment in Shenzhen, and that was sufficient to yield a reasonably good collection of architectural shots. Such is the wonders of modern China cities. The two sites covered were Shenzhen University, mainly for its gorgeous student housing blocks that prove that tasteful architecture need not be posh to look striking, and then the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center that got us blown away with its beautiful perforated external steel skin. I'm definitely not done with this city. Can't wait to be back again.

PUBLIC & LOW-COST HOUSING
ARCHITECTURE SERIES

I'm a city boy at heart. The bustle of the urban jungle excites me, its various dizzying interplay of architectural elements and their inhabitants sprawled out like a treasure throve of pleasant discoveries, keeping my wandering mind entertained. While fancy new developments may be giving the urban skyline its newfound sparkle, I hold a special place in my heart for the city's countless public and low-cost housing estates. The often fuss-free, functional blocks may stand bare and unattractive among the modern skyscrapers, but the current minimalism movement has finally start to show how these seemingly boring architecture can hold such startling beauty, if only we care to take time to explore and uncover them. So follow me as I embark on this exploration, one apartment at a time.
