MOONLIT DRAGON

Drama on the night of the dragon and the moon. My two midautumn lovebirds reunite for another themed shoot at Kwai Chai Hong, this time going all out for the martial arts set, against the backdrop of unrealitykai’s beautiful reimagination of the cultural themes surrounding the dragon and the full moon. Themed The Moonlit Dragon, this latest art installation starts 25 Aug and will go on until 8 Oct. Mark your calendars.

@ SHAH ALAM

Our Ramadhan/Raya themed shoot this year brought us to the famous Blue Mosque of Shah Alam. Completed in 1988, this beautiful piece of architecture has held the title of one of the prettiest mosque in the country, and I can clearly see why. The mosque is opened to public according to the visiting hours.

KHOK SALUNG FLOATING RAILWAY
@ LOP BURI, THAILAND

About a 3-hour drive away from Bangkok is perhaps Thailand’s most photogenic railway stretch. Floating above the water reservoir created by the Pasak Chonlasit Dam, this 18km-long stretch is giving us some really strong Ghibli vibes. In addition to the tracks, the site also features other cool photo and hangout spots on the vast plains of grassland below. The train only stops on the tracks for special journeys, as it will usually just zoom past quickly before you could get ready to pose, as with our case. We will be back!

SUBANG JAYA
BY SIME DARBY PROPERTY

The bustling commercial center of Subang Jaya has always been known for its food and other conveniences, but we challenged ourselves to uncover its photogenic side too this morning. That adventure brought us to Subang Ria Park, the SJCC Property Gallery, and a few pretty cafes and retail outlets nearby.

IN KL EAST MALL
CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS 2021

In addition to 1 Utama, KL East Mall decided that their Chinese New Year decorations, its first since the mall's opening, cannot be a hurried affair, and so commissioned for an elaborate set up to bring in some festive cheer. Two giant majestic peacock fishes perch at the oriental aquarium that welcomes visitors as their enter the Main Atrium. Remember to pose at the half-moon gates at both sides of the installation which give the best angle of the space.

Vernakular is half a watch retail store and half a cafe, and the people behind the cool interiors of this place had to make sure your experience in each is as distinct as the boundary that runs across the space. This playful separation sets the stage for some really fun visual illusion that is begging to be experienced.

OWEN YAP
@ MELAKA

Our next adventure with Owen Yap brought us to the historical city of Melaka. While I have lost count of the number of times I've been here, the evolving city has proven to still have the ability to keep us entertained as we uncovered new sights to shoot in, especially along the river.

OWEN YAP
@ PANTAI PASIR KLEBANG,
MELAKA

It was one of the most gorgeous evening that I have witnessed locally, and I had the honour of spending that at this charming instagram spot in Melaka, in the company of Owen. The Klebang sand dunes shot to fame a few years ago, and by not being here sooner due to the scare of heatstroke, I have unfortunately lost the breathtaking sight of a vast stretch of sand dunes and nothing else. Nevertheless, the set of trees lining the edges now added an hint of tropical wilderness to contrast the setting. It's the perfect reason for the early-visitors to come explore again.

TIAN CHAD
@ AQUARIA, KLCC

In the underwater world of Aquaria, the predominantly blue hues are punctuated with red tones from my fotorgear pocket light, adding a tinge of highlights that sets the model apart from his surrounding. It's not an everyday thing to have the whole place to ourselves, so I had Tian Chad to thank for this opportunity.

OWEN YAP
@ KUALA SEPETANG, PERAK

The thriving fishing town of Kuala Sepetang, once known by its english name Port Weld, may have shaken off its earlier role as an important part in the tin mine production in nearby Taiping, but its tight-knit community is a treasure trove of charming local cultures and practices. In addition to fishing and its related industries, the huge expanse of mangrove forest surrounding the town helps support the charcoal production here, and gave the town another reason for tourists on a heritage trail hunt. Among other fun activities to do here include taking a boat ride out for dolphin watching, eagle-feeding and a visit to Kuala Sangga.

OWEN YAP
@ THE UPPER, MELAKA

The name of the cafe is a strong hint of what pretty things you'll find if you follow the hint well. This is the other cafe that captivated us during the last trip to Melaka. The sprawling two-floor space is charmingly styled with vintage memorabilia and greeneries, and a seemingly endless string of angles to pose in. Late morning on a weekday is the best time possible to visit for a care-free OOTD session.

Like many beautiful spaces, this interior is best experienced in the company of some good models, and I don't think I'll find anyone better than XJ and Joshua for their funny antics and gorgeous chemistry.

REY & LORAINE:
SANTORINI EDITION

Among the few destinations that we covered, Santorini stood out as the most memorable one for both myself and for Rey and Loraine. The interplay of beautiful weather with charming architecture hit the perfect note as the couple went from one idyllic town to another, soaking in the charming Greek culture as we went along. I could spend a whole month here exploring each and every corner of this unforgettable island.

FIONA

From the elaborate cheese party spread, to the matching sets of attire and the visualisation of the styling and props, Fiona has everything planned out months ahead of the shoot. I had a really fun shoot that Friday morning and noon as we work alongside committed folks covering two locations to bring Fiona's visuals to life.

SIAVASH & HUI LI
PREWEDDING
@ PENANG

This is technically a post-wedding portrait, as Si & Hui Li enjoyed their wedding ceremony shoot so much that they changed their minds about not doing a prewedding shoot. So about three weeks after the ceremony, we were back in the embrace of this beautiful island again, this time with me getting their full, undivided attention for some fun time posing against our chosen backdrops. I'm appreciative of the fact that the couple is into oldschool architecture as well, so the Rifle Range Flats became one of the key locations for the shoot. Glad that all the effort of venturing in old apartments for cool angles are paying off.

Back in the embrace of my recent favourite portrait location in Kuala Lumpur, this time in the company of none other than Jordan Yeoh himself. "
FISH & MRS."

My love for Taman Bukit Pantai, or the fishy neighbourhood as I affectionately call it, started many years ago with the discovery of Baba Low and Sekeping Tenggiri. It's not easy to be hip with streets that are named after fishes, but when you have houses that are rebuilt with a strong sense of artsy progressive architecture style yet still marvellously staying true to its vintage roots, you get this really promising neighbourhood that continues to excite at every turn.

Here's a few noteworthy gems of this taman that you may want to check out:

THIS MORNING CIKGU
BROUGHT US TO SEKINCHAN

A shoot over in the charming town of Sekinchan, with a theme set in the 70s, loosely revolving around a group of nerdy (but fashionista wannabes) students on a field trip out with their favourite teacher – this has got to be the most challenging yet fulfilling portrait shoot that I have embarked on so far.

But thanks to all the passionate and talented people out there, with just over a week of planning and a long string of discussion thread in facebook, there really is nothing that we cannot achieve if we put our heads together.

And I couldn't have done it without my truly inspiring fashion stylist Daniel Henry, who arrived at my place for the fitting session with two luggages-full of retro goodies, and who injected so much insights and ideas into the final conception of the shoot. And of course the shots wouldn't have turned out half as convincing without his charming Mini. :)

PORTRAITS • AUG 2015

RUDOLF CEZAR IN
"RUDOLF'S RAMBLING"

During my research in Instagram of exciting things to do in New York, I chanced upon Rudolf's profile and so my first portrait shoot over at this exciting, new playground in the West was arranged. Naturally, the backdrop will have to feature one of the top destination in my off-the-tourist-map to-go list - this really cool underground metro station on the Path line on 9th street, which did not disappoint! Rudolf also suggested the High Line Park to take advantage of a sunny summer afternoon, which we covered as well. The whole experience felt surreal, doing some that I'm so familiar with, yet in a very unfamiliar setting.

CARMEN SARAH CHUNG IN "MEMORIES"

In time for the upcoming release of her second music album, slated for this October, gospel singer Carmen Sarah Chung drops in for possibly my sixth portrait album to be shot in the charming labyrinthine landscape of Centrio. The good news is that I'm still finding angles and spots that I have not discovered yet, confirming my love for this gorgeous abode as perfectly justified.

THE ANDAMAN, LANGKAWI

The Andaman played host today to a magical beach wedding ceremony for the gorgeous couple Jon and Camelia. PANTAI MEK MAS
@ KOTA BHARU, KELANTAN

This beautiful expanse of sand dunes at Pantai Mek Mas is giving us Ghibli vibes. It's been on my to-do list for awhile and am happy to arrive in the company of a sweet couple on a beautiful sunny and windy evening. The dunes may be what people come here for, but I thought the overgrown vegetation added a new level of surrealism to the place.

We are reliving some seriously vivid childhood memories here, those long afternoons spent while accompanying our moms to the hair saloons. This comic was popular from the 1960s through 1980s, and there is no better backdrop to bring the character back to life than our favourite heritage city, Georgetown. Special thanks to my model Wei Jian, for braving the constant attention the entire morning to complete this shoot.

BHUMI LIFESTYLE
@ BUKIT BINTANG

It may be hard to believe that the space of an empty commercial lot could be this much fun to shoot, but when you fill it with the passionate team behind this yoga and pilates studio, the bare concrete backdrop became our canvas for some clean yet powerful images. This space is also blessed with a large outdoor area that overlooks the busy Bukit Bintang street below, extending our playground outwards for some variety.

It's been easily two years since my last portrait session here, and I'm glad to see Taman Weng Lock still holding up to the title of the most charming neighbourhood in KL. This round I'm accompanied by Angel Tan who wanted a set of photos to commemorate her 40th birthday. While I may have moved on to focus more on the commercial architectural and interior projects of late, it's still pretty fulfilling when a beautifully set up wedding day comes along, what more when famous Hong-Kong artists are in the guest list! After a few months of droning around shooting buildings and random objects, I finally got my first taste of using the Mavic Pro for my prewedding assignment. So a year has passed since my last prewedding assignment in Melaka and this giggly, happy couple is all it takes to reignite another round of passionate recollection of the wonderful memories that I have had in one of my favourite heritage town in Malaysia.

As we braved our way through the throngs of weekend crowd from the Stadthuys to Riverwalk to Jonker, I'm glad to note that, as development continues, the authorities does see to the strict conservation of heritage sites and surrounding area to maintain the charm of this UNESCO heritage site.

And I'm truly honoured to be the photographer covering this beautiful day for the sweet young couple Aravin and Hema, their antics perhaps as fun as the ceremony itself. BEN & JIN IN
GEORGETOWN, PENANG

There was a time when all I wanted was for the chance to shoot at the mother of all quaint neighbourhoods, this living, thriving cacophony of bustling markets, chic cafes, narrow back alleys all playing to the laid-back tunes of yesteryears. And so to actually be roaming Georgetown's streets with an excited couple became rather surreal for a moment. Ben and Jin flew in from Singapore to experience the thriving heritage zone for themselves and left with buckets of beautiful memories.

Perhaps one day you'll hear me proclaiming myself as a Penangite, we all can dream.

This theme is a marriage of my new-found passion in underwater portrait photography and my all-time favourite food fetish subject, one that started many years ago with watermelons. And so this bright red juicy fruit has made a comeback, this time against the blue hues of a pool bathed in midday sunlight. The result is a beautiful contrast of red and blue. :">

Special thanks to my absolutely cooperative model Jeff Ling for enduring the gulps after gulps of chlorine-soaked melon juice, all in the name of art.

JACLYNN IN
"五十四号美女"

The collaboration with Doris, the stylist on a start-up to promote her collection of bridal accessories, brought us this beautiful set of photos. Jaclynn was the model of choice and I can certainly see why. She strutted, she ran, she posed, all in her fluffy white gown on a piping hot late morning in Putrajaya, without the slightest show of displeasure. We couldn't have landed ourselves someone better for the job.

LOONG & MAY IN
"JONKER.JAZZ" (JONKER STREET, MALACCA/ MELAKA)

Back again in the warm embrace of charming Melaka (Malacca), this time in the company of Loong and May. Could the weather be any hotter? Yes! But will i ever get bored of this old town? Apparently no.

PRISCILLA SOH IN
"美人鱼"

Underwater portrait is all the craze now, and here's my interpretation of the magical world beneath with Priscilla.

The first thing that we quickly realised was that, contrary to the claims of non-swimmers, it's actually really hard to sink downwards, and we were struggling to go lower in order to position ourselves into more interesting angles. We also only had two hours to complete the shoot, that's the narrow timeframe when the pool enjoyed the blessing of full sunlight before the shadows of the condo blocks set in.

The only extra gear that I used to allow us to shoot underwater is this wonderful soft casing from Dicapac, bought online at a price that is just a small fraction of those impossibly-priced hard casing.

KENNETH & BEEYONG IN
"TO GEORGETOWN WITH LOVE"

A minute spent with Kenneth and Bee Yong and I already knew they would have nothing but an album of candid and care-free, slightly quirky shots. There's no room in their fun-loving hearts for pretentious poses. And so the theme for this prewed album, set against the familiar backdrop of their beloved hometown of Georgetown, Penang, is confirmed. This charming heritage neighbourhood simply refuses to bore. In fact with the gradual rise of arts establishments and tasteful f&b outlets, things are set to get even more exciting.

LIM POHYENG & GARFIELD LOW IN
"GOING HOME 回家"

The Happy Mansion Apartment blocks in Seksyen 17 has been in my to-shoot list for awhile. Today I checked that off in the company of a sweet couple in this themed shoot done in commemoration of a recent heart-breaking event.

Kids! Shooting them is one-half pain, and one-half joy. These stills are in done conjunction with the TVC of a children milk powder brand, truly an experience that I absolutely enjoyed.

BRYAN JOHN PAULOSE IN
"THE VACATION"

Officially the first portrait session in the labyrinthine maze that is HeartAbode v3, I have but merely touched the surface of this photography wonderland. Nevertheless the pace for more fun things to come has now been set. :">

JONATHAN IN
"MIDNOON RESERVOIR"

Contrary to those in the Klang Valley, reservoirs in Singapore are so much more accessible. After my very pleasant discovery of the Kranji reservoir in the previous visit, I'm now back for more at MacRitchie.

ATHENA BEH
ALBUM PORTRAITS

This 62th portrait album is technically my first fully commercial assignment, shot in Dec 2010, for a new Malaysian-based singer, Athena Beh 马嘉轩, whose new mini album 配角 has just now been released on 9 March 2011.

While most of my previous work has been pretty much independant, it's definitely an interesting experience to now collaborate with a team of art director and stylists who have as much interest and say in the theme and directon of an album as me. The Saturday morning weather wasn't exactly perfect, but I had fun! :)

PORTRAITS • JUL 2010

WESLEY YAP IN
"金鱼佬"

The Jalan Alor/ Tengkat Tongshin neighbourhood still hold a dear place in my heart after all the numerous shots that I have done there over the years, and today, yet again, it has become the backdrop of my latest portrait shoot for new-comer Wesley Yap. This young chap comes with loads of enthusiasm and passion that I'm glad to say match that of mine, would definitely look forward to working with him again!

PORTRAITS • APR 2011

WENG

This commissioned shoot for Weng brought me all the way to Singapore, back to the very gorgeous Henderson Waves structure of which my original visit was love-at-first-sight. And so I finally completed my year-long dream of doing a portrait shoot here.

Done on a sunny, windy, Saturday morning, the weather could not be better, but nevertheless I guess I could have chosen a weekday instead, as it was an absolute nightmare trying to cut off from my shots the throngs of joggers and visitors who had come to admire this little wonder.

And erm, please excuse the japanese characters. These are mainly used for illustration purposes. :P

WEDDINGS • JUL 2011

PATRICK & FIONA IN
"TO BINTAN WITH LOVE"
(PULAU BINTAN)

Heartpatrick does preweds at a beach resort, that's virtually unheard of, but when the elements are right I could try to put away my obsession with old-school heritage and learn to appreciate the sea and the sand too. ;)

Patrick and Fiona play this sweet young couple who flew in all the way from Hong Kong into the charming embrace of Pulau Bintan, and against all odds (despite a contradictory weather forecast) we got a sunny day that continued to stay that way till sunset!

HEARTPATRICK PUPPY PORTRAITS:可乐

Special thanks to Charles for entrusting Mum and I with his 4-month-old fur kid for a few days. We have enjoyed every single minute of the company of this sweet bundle of joy. Now the space below the spiral staircase where Ho Lok's puppy house was set up is now a permanent void, perhaps waiting to be filled up again by a more permanent new member of the family that we can finally call our own. :">

PORTRAITS • AUG 2012

BRYAN JOHN PAULOSE IN "MID.NOON"

There was a time when the only portrait shoots I did were those done in the convenience of my humble abode, so much so that my buddies said they will puke if I ever publish another album shot at the Tamarind. Well, the last published album done here was in Dec 2010, so with our relatively short attentive span given all the distractions that is facebook, I'm sure it's a safe time now to sneak in another one, no? I promise I will try to get some fresh perspectives. And for sure a fresh model, at the very least.

PORTRAITS • SEP 2015

COLIN TANG IN
"WORKING WITH COLIN"

Colin wanted a set of photos to commemorate his coming of age by, and thus the slipping on of the tux, though rare as an attire in Heartpatrick's lineup, is all but appropriate, especially so when set against the chic modern setting of the St Mary Residences.

Looks like the month of December is another hectic one for me, with this second actual-day shoot schedule back to back with the first one.

PORTRAITS • JUL 2012

DESMOND WONG IN
"SUNSET RESERVOIR"

And so, a planned shoot at the dilapidated Neo Tiew housing estate turned muji-inspired sunset take-a-breather kinda relaxed theme instead - that's the unexpected twists life tend to bring with it sometimes. But in the case of this hurriedly-organised People 78 shoot, it's this kinda life's little surprises that become pleasantly memorable. Seriously, how can the combination of a keen setting sun, stretchy shadows, salty breeze, and a large body of glittery water go wrong. :)

NEWBORN PORTRAIT
"THREE"

After having shot 67 grown-up (or semi grown-up) official models, Hearpatrick finally got to point his lenses at a newborn darling! The little one takes no order to pose, makes faces and expressions as he pleases and takes breaks as he feels appropriate, but the two-hour sessions was filled with quiet little oohs and aahs that made this shoot undeniably the most heart-warming one for as far as I remember. :">

PORTRAITS • JUN 2011

ADAM AND ERIKA IN
"TWOANDAHALF"

Thank goodness for the 'fan mail' from Erika, for I've been waiting for my first official pregnancy portrait for quite awhile now. Didn't take me long to seal the deal, along with the rights to document Giles Junior's first few weeks out in this world. :)

And finally the weather gave in to my cries for a strong morning sun. A beautiful day, and a lovely couple that took just ten minutes to warm up to the lens, what more could I have asked for.

JOEY & CHIN LAY IN
"LOVE AND ALL ITS TRADES" (PJ TRADE CENTER DAMANSARA PERDANA)

It was love at first sight, this curiously bare-looking building from afar speaks volumes about Sek San's philosophy, a space jealously guarded by a close circle of avid photographers, and accessible only to those who have mastered their ways around the protective guards. I'm glad I didn't have to kill to shoot here, thanks to my wonderful client for having gone through the pain of getting the approval from the management.

PORTRAITS • AUG 2009

VIVIEN LIM IN
"漫游十点钟"

The first album to be published in August 2009 is also *finally* my first female portrait album in a very very long time! Haha, after being fed all the persistent questions of why most of my models are strictly male, I now have the answer halleluyah.

Further to the very successful collaboration the week before during her graduation portrait, I had the honour of shooting Vivien again in this fun outdoor portrait through the streets of Bukit Bintang and Imbi. Sporting a youthful, carefree yet often times sultry looks, Vivien is indeed a breeze to shoot. :)

VIVIEN IN
"阳光五十六"

September has indeed been pretty productive so far, with the publishing of my third album this month, with another extension of my female portrait series. Has the vicious cycle on male portraits been broken? I dunno, but it's indeed a refreshing experience shooting Vivien again after our very successful collaboration a year ago. She's just as natural in front of the camera, a breeze to capture indeed, and a sunny day just will never go wrong. :)

WILLIE CHAN IN

JO & CLARE

After a ten-month break from taking on actual-day wedding assignments, I'm finally back! Have to admit that I do miss all the happy lovey-dovey emotions that are overflowing with so much abundance during this kind of joyous occasions. And this is definitely one of the main reasons why I still find myself waking up 5am in the morning and staying up shooting all the way till almost midnight everytime. Thanks Jo and Clare for your trust in me, and for all the wonderful people whom I have met along the way. :)

Cut short my Bangkok trip to fly in to Singapore to cover this luncheon wedding reception for a small group of well-wishers who came together at Flutes at the National Museum, for the wedding reception of Richard and Vivien. VIVIEN LIM IN
"阳光九十九"

Never thought that this day will come, but it looks like I'm finally staring at the end of my double-digit running number for my people series.

Can't help but retrace the journey so far, those wonderful models that I've met along the way, these are the beautiful people to whom I owe the deepest gratitude for giving me the opportunity to grow and to experiment.

I guess I have always ponder what the future may bring, but regardless, the past seven years has been one hell of a joyride.

Thank you all for your love and support. :">

PRISCILLA WONG IN
"中午"

Apparently one of the harshest time of the day for a shoot but there really is no stopping anyone from making a hot bright mid noon work, as long as you set your heart to it. The world would definitely be a rather boring place is shots are only done during the golden hours.

HEARTPATRICK & JIRIC IN
"剧院对话"

The lobby of Lai Chun Yuen is charming enough to deserve a portrait shoot of its own, and on a quiet post-dinner weekend evening, a camwhore session can be surprisingly productive when in the right company. Thanks Jiric for this lovely shot, and please look out for your own too! :">

小如

My second collaboration with stylist Doris was a much-awaited event because I had fond memories of her attention to details, and the lovely accessories that she was able to cook up for the models. Done in about six hours or so, in the company of two fun videographers and my supportive photography kaki, this shoot saw us sweeping through the lobbies and corridors of Pullman Resort in search of the perfect spot to place model, dressed up as the hopeful bride who is out on a not-so-sunny day for a taste of love.
