The main agenda of our two-week-long Japan archi hunt: Tadao Ando’s sprawling 100,000 sqm architectural playground by the sea. Built on the site of a hillside scarred by a failed hotel project and later devastated by the 1995 Kobe earthquake, this place is Ando’s poetic response to loss and regeneration. This set was a two days' worth of running around like a mad man, chasing light across the layered terraces, gardens, and courtyards, yet I probably only covered 60% of the site.
